Cornstarch rubbed into your dog’s coat and then brushed out will remove sand.  It’s a great way to make sure that the sand you picked up at the beach stays out of the house.

If you suffer from seasonal allergies, your four-legged family member may be bringing pollen into your home.  Try wiping your dog down with baby wipes before letting him inside and be sure to bath him once a week with a gentle shampoo.

Harvard Has Gone To The Dogs

Harvard Canine Cognition LabCaninecognitionlab

Harvard Canine Cognition Lab is interested in learning more about a dog’s feelings and thoughts.  They believe that dogs can be studied to better understand the human mind.  The non-invasive behavioral studies hope to find out things such as:

  • Is the dog patient?
  • Does the dog distinguish between accidental and intentional actions?
  • Can the dog grasp the abstract concept of “same,” understanding that sameness refers to two identical objects?

The non-invasive behavioral experiments are designed not only to understand how the dog solves problems, reacts to patterns of sound, and reflects on what is known and unknown, but to be engaging and fun for the dog.

For more information regarding this ongoing study visit Harvard Canine Cognition Lab.

Rover9781598694369

Meaning: One who roves or wanders – the classic name for a dog for at least thirty years from the 1920s.

Origins & History: To “rove” was apparently coined with its current meaning in around 1536; however, by 1607 it had become an archery term, and to “rove” was to shoot at a randomly selected target (which might therefore be in any direction and at any distance).  Within another hundred years it had retrieved its original meaning, thanks to confusion with the Dutch term rover, meaning “robber” and especially “pirate,” and sea rovers were then held not only to rob, but also to wander the oceans at will.

Do you know what to do if your pet is lost?Jack02

First thing to remember is don’t panic.  Here is a list put together by Iams.

  • Look all over your property, including new places where your dog might try to hide.
  • Search the neighborhood. Talk to your neighbors, and leave a note with your name & phone number at houses where no one is home.  Call your pet’s name frequently.
  • Help your pet find his way home. Place bedding or some of your dirty clothes outside your house as a homing scent.
  • Call local veterinarians, shelters, rescues and humane societies. Also check with Dept. of Transportation in case your pet was injured on the road.
  • Post flyers in the area. Include a photo, detailed description and your phone number (but not your name or address).
  • Place a “lost dog” ad in your local newspaper’s classifieds.
