Chocolate Toxicity

Chocolate Toxicity

Most of us have heard that chocolate is bad for our dogs but do you know what makes it toxic or that different types of chocolate have different toxicity levels?  A component of chocolate is Theobromine.  This compound is what makes chocolate that so many of us love poisonous to our pets.

The highest levels of Theobromine are found in cocoa powder.  Followed by baking, dark, semi-sweet, milk and finally, the lowest levels are found in white chocolate.

Signs of Toxicity include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Hyper-activity
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Excessive thirst
