Pet Dental Awareness

February is Pet Dental Awareness Month.  I know that we have talked about the importance of dental health before but thought that this would be a good time to revisit it.  Did you know that you should NOT use human toothpaste for your pets?  It can upset their stomachs.  Be sure to get a pet approved toothpaste.

Dog swallows something it shouldn’t have

No matter how careful we try to be, it is likely that our sweet pooches will still be able to get a hold of something that is off limits.  In the event that they eat something that they shouldn’t, such as a whole bar of dark chocolate, a small dose of 3% hydrogen peroxide will cause them to vomit it back up.  The amount to use is one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight.  Walk your dog around and it should take effect within about 15 to 20 minutes.  *In the event that you do not know what the toxin is or if the object swallowed is large or sharp, contact your vet immediately.  It is possible that more damage could be done to the dog by bringing the item back up.

Winter Blues

Even though our pets may not be outside as much during these winter months, they still need to be bathed & groomed regularly.  It not only helps keep their skin & coat healthy but also their mental attitude.

Share the Thanksgiving Spirit

Want to include your four legged friend in the feeding festivities?  Add a little pumpkin to their food.  Be sure to use the plain canned pumpkin and NOT the pie filling.  Your dog will be happy at getting a special healthy treat.

Winter Weight

If your dog is less active in the winter months, they may need to eat less food.  Likewise, if your dog gets lots of exercise during the winter, they may need a little extra food.

Spidersgrass-spider

Did you know that there are nearly 40,000 species of spiders?  Our pets are bound to get bit with this many around.  It’s always hard to know if your dog has been bitten by a spider unless you see it happen.  A spider bite should be considered anytime your dog has acute salivation, pain, anxiety, and an overall inability to get comfortable.

Dog Hairdoghair-2

Last week’s tip got me thinking about all the dog hair I find.  Did you ever wonder why dogs large & small shed so much more than humans?  Turns out that unlike humans, who have a 1 follicle, 1 pore, and 1 hair, a dog has multiple follicles, 1 pore, and multiple hairs.  Plus dogs grow new hair every few days or a week.    Even a small, short-coated dog can shed as much per square inch as a large dog.   The way to help keep all this shedding under control is to brush them.  Once a week will help to greatly reduce the amount of hair around your house.
